Fontana saw 400 downhillers arrive in Fontana on Sunday to compete for the California State title. Southridge Racing Club created a new course to level the playing field for those who traveled a long distance to win Golden State glory.
The tone this race set was more important than the racing and the newly crowned state champions. The positive vibe was infectious. The course and Southridge Park were loved by riders. It was clear that SoCal downhilling remains as healthy as ever.

John Kirkcaldie, a two-time NORBA Downhill Champion from Team Maxxis, was injured in the difficult rock section of Saturday practice. The New Zealander was only able to heal the superficial wound and is now back on his bike.

Rich Houseman, the defending champion, never got to defend his title even once. Rich broke his Yeti’s derailleur in the first round and was unable compete in the second.

Terry Martin was on assignment. Here’s a selection of what he saw.

Roger Hurd, Romic’s owner, at the top. Red Bull was among the many sponsors that showed their support. Roger is part of the Hurd family, which is well-known for its desert racing exploits.

Cal State Championship was open to all and Jared Rando, an Australian star, won it all. The Giant factory rider is also two-time defending Australian National DH Series champion.

Terry Maddox steps into the rock pit. He has been playing at Southridge for 10 years and is a top competitor on national circuit. Mad Dog was the fourth fastest Vet Pro in the state.

Privateer Waylon Smith flew through the rock pit like a bird. The most important part of the course was the rock section. You had to tiptoe between the rocks if you didn’t want to pin it.

Blain Simpson makes a straight line through the mid-course sweeper to secure his 2nd place in the Sport 19-25 class. Another Eric Carter Downhill Clinic graduate, the Bison has made great progress.

It was a great course at Cal State. The water truck was in perfect condition and came out on race day. You could see about 85% of all the action from the top of the hill.
